# Delete a Backup Unit

If you no longer need a backup unit and its backups, you can delete them to save costs and space. Deleting a Backup Unit also deletes all backups it contains.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:**

* When you delete a server and its storage devices or an entire data center, its backups are not automatically deleted. Only when you delete a backup unit are the backups it contains deleted.
* If you no longer need the backups of deleted VMs and want to save costs, you must delete them manually in the **Backup Service Console**.
  {% endhint %}

1\. In the **DCD**, go to **Menu** > **Storage & Backup** > **Backup Unit Manager**.

2\. Select the required backup unit to be deleted.

3\. Click **Delete**.

4\. In the dialog, confirm the delete action by entering your **Password** and clicking **OK**.

**Result:** The selected backup unit and the backups it contains are successfully deleted. Once deleted, the backup unit cannot be restored.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/backup-and-storage/backup-service/how-tos/delete-backup-unit.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
