# Connect via Remote Console

The [<mark style="color:blue;">**Remote Console**</mark>](https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/support/general-information/glossary-of-terms#remote-console) is used to connect to a [<mark style="color:blue;">server</mark>](https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/support/general-information/glossary-of-terms#server) when, for example, [<mark style="color:blue;">SSH</mark>](https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/support/general-information/glossary-of-terms#secure-shell-ssh-keys) is not available. You must have the root or administrator password for this type of log-in to the server.

**Prerequisites:** Make sure you have the appropriate permissions. Only contract owners, administrators, or users with **access rights** to the data center can connect to a server. Other user types have read-only access and cannot provision changes.

### Procedure

1\. In the **DCD**, go to **Menu** > **Virtual Data Centers**.

2\. Open the **Remote Console** from the list of your **Virtual Data Centers** or from the **Workspace**.

To connect through the virtual data centers, follow these steps:

1\. Select **Virtual Data Centers** in the left navigation menu. A list of data centers is displayed.

2\. Click the arrow beside the respective data center's **Name** to view the associated list of servers.

4\. Select **Open remote console**.

To connect through the workspace, follow these steps:

1\. Select **Virtual Data Centers** in the left navigation menu.

2\. Select the name of the respective data center containing the required server.

3\. In the **Workspace**, select the server.

4\. Right-click on the server to choose **Console** from the context menu or select **Console** in the **Inspector** pane.

**Result:** Remote Console version matching your browser opens; you can now log in to the server with root or administrator password.

**Note:**

* Use the **Send Key Combo** button on the top right of the **Remote Console** window to send shortcut key combinations (such as CTRL+ALT+DEL).
* Launch the **Remote Console** window again with one click by bookmarking its URL address in your browser.
* For security reasons, once your session is over, always close the browser used to connect to [<mark style="color:blue;">VM</mark>](https://docs.ionos.com/cloud/support/general-information/glossary-of-terms#vm) with this bookmark.
